Does this guy like me or being overtly friendly?

i just moved to a residential college two months ago There is this guy who is kinda cute but i dont know him at all and we havent made small talks yet probably sat together with other people in the dinning hall twice. other times we sat at different tables so we might have seen each other around occasionally. yesterday on my way to the lecture i spotted him from distance (well coz he is one of the few people i know as i'm new to the place) walking back the opposite way. the funny and unexpected thing is he spotted me too 50m away among other random people and locked eyes with me for more than 5s? and gave me a huge smile and muttered something looks like hi. and today i was at the vending machine he saw me from afar and had a big smile at me too and kinda waved at me? i was so astonished coz there are nearly 400 residents and we dont know each other at all except sitting at the same table twice and seen each other around sometimes. he might just be friendly with me or likes me? Sorry i'm just too happy coz it was so cute:)
