Does space really destroy a relationship?

Right now I am thinking about taking a break with my boyfriend to solve out my own personal problems but he thinks that it will make it worse and he is throwing a little fit saying that everything is going to go wrong. Not to mention he is antagonizing me about what i'm going to do during our time apart. Personally I think space only destroys relationships if the two people are weak willed. Anyways does it in your opinion destroy it? and should i continue seeing my bf if he is acting so immaturely?
